Frequently Asked Questions

I recognize The Lab School is different than my current school. How do I know if it's the right fit?

Each family is unique, though there are some similarities we've seen between the families who are happiest and most successful in this model. Generally speaking, The Lab School is a perfect fit for:

  • People who want their children to be curious, independent, lifelong learners
  • People who are concerned that a conventional school setting will extinguish the light of curiosity in their child's eyes
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Creators and creatives
  • Out-of-the-box thinkers
  • People who want the benefits of child-directed learning without having to make a full-time commitment to homeschooling
  • Trailblazers and trendsetters
  • Families who want their children to develop a love of learning
  • People who believe that equipping young people with 21st-century skills is more important than grades and standardized testing

We encourage families to be intentional about their decision to apply to The Lab School. Please read our site and other materials, watch videos, and attend an open house event to make the most informed decision.

What grades/ages do you serve?

For the 2023-24 academic year, The Lab School is enrolling young people ages 5 through 11.

As the founding group matures, we will grow to studios serving elementary, middle, and high school.

What is your calendar and daily schedule?

The Lab School day begins at 8:30 am daily (drop-off starting at 8:00 am) and ends at 3:15 pm.

We operate on a 10-month calendar, with breaks to refuel during widely-observed holiday periods.

What do you mean by "a hero's journey"?

We believe that each of us has a special calling in life, and a series of trials and tests that must be faced with integrity and purpose in order to live a satisfying and fulfilled life. A key part of our mission is to prepare your child for his or her special journey.

Will children be grouped together by grades?

No. We believe that children learn best when working with children younger and older than themselves, as opposed to age-based grouping.

What kind of learner thrives at The Lab School?

Young people who love to learn, are curious, self-motivated, and respectful. Our environment is an accelerator for the independent learner who can tackle challenging questions, follow instructions, and solve problems.

Do you offer scholarships?

No, we do not currently offer scholarships.

If you would like to contribute to The Lab School's Scholarship Fund, please let us know. We are eager to share this opportunity with as many young people as possible.

Is The Lab School a Montessori school?

We are not a Montessori school, but we do incorporate many Montessori materials and principles including:

  • Mixed-age classes
  • Freedom within limits
  • Large blocks of uninterrupted work time
  • Learning through “discovery"
  • Freedom of movement

What resources do you have for children with special learning needs?

We are not trained or staffed to serve children who need specialized attention due to serious learning or behavioral challenges. We treat each and every situation individually, so if you are interested in The Lab School and believe it is a great fit for your family, please inquire and we will personally assess your unique situation and our ability to serve your young learner.

Is The Lab School accredited?

Yes. We are accredited by the International Association of Learner-Driven Schools (IALDS) and a candidate for accreditation with Cognia.
